Help Protect Clean Water in 2016

It’s that time again…the WV Legislature opens its 60-day session next week and we’ll be there speaking for clean water and healthy rivers. Sign-up to receive our water policy updates to stay in the loop and learn how you can make a difference for clean water in West Virginia! Here's a preview of some of the issues we'll need your help on:

  • Public Water Supply Protection Act - WV Rivers represents you on the Public Water System Supply Study Commission which recently issued its report to the Legislature. We’ll be working with lawmakers to adopt the recommendations in the report.
  • Water Quality Standards revisions – We’ll be working to oppose weakening of the aluminum and selenium standards and we’ll defend “Category A” public water supply use protections.
  • Aboveground Storage Tank Rule – The legislature will be considering new regulations for aboveground storage tanks and we'll be there to oppose further weakening of the storage tank standards.
  • Horizontal Well Control Act Rule revisions – WV Rivers supports strong regulation of "fracking" to adequately protect water supplies. Read our technical comments on the proposed revisions here.
Stay tuned to our water policy webpage for updates and more in-depth reading on these issues.

Good News for Special Places
Special places like the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge benefit from the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Last month WV Rivers asked you to take action on the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which helps protect and provide access to special places. It worked! Congress has approved a 3-year extension to LWCF by adopting the 2016 federal spending bill. Not only was the LWCF renewed, it received a $150 million increase over last year’s funding!
