An Elk River Journey from the Monument to the Mouth
May 16 is the launch of Elkspedition, a sojourn from the headwaters of the Elk in the proposed Birthplace of Rivers to the Kanawha in Charleston. Volunteer adventurers Matt Kearns (pictured left) and Adam Swisher will hike, bike, and paddle the entire 173 miles to rally support for Birthplace of Rivers. You can follow their journey here.
Save the date for Memorial Day, May 30, for a FREE Elkspedition Homecoming Picnic to welcome Matt and Adam as they conclude the journey. You can also catch them at one of their stops along the way:
May 18 - Elk River Inn and Restaurant in Slatyfork from 5-8:00pm. Join the guys for a beer and wish them bon voyage as they continue their journey.
May 24 - Café Cimino Country Inn in Sutton. Matt and Adam will be at Café Cimino at 5pm, learn more here.
You're Invited! Elkspedition Homecoming Picnic - May 30
We're celebrating the conclusion of the Elkspedition and the Birthplace of Rivers National Monument by throwing a community Memorial Day picnic and you're all invited! We’ll have food and games and lots of fun in store.
Prior to the picnic, paddle a section of the final leg of the Elkspedition with Matt Kearns and Adam Swisher! WV Rivers has teamed up with ACE Adventure to offer a limited number FREE seats on ACE rafts as part of an Elkspedition Homecoming flotilla. Reserve your raft seat here. Be sure to reserve your space soon – they will fill up fast! Or BYOB - bring your own boat! ACE will provide shuttle service for private boaters. RSVP here.
The trip is 3.5 miles and is expected to take 1.5 hours. At the end of the trip, plan to join us for the FREE Elkspedition Homecoming Picnic featuring food, games and live music! No preregistration is needed for the picnic portion of the event.
Local Supporters to Deliver Letters to President
Thanks to all of you who have written letters and postcards to President Obama urging him to create Birthplace of Rivers National Monument. A team from Pocahontas County will deliver nearly 1,500 cards and letters to the President in Washington, DC, May 18. It’s not too late for you to sign a letter. It’s easy. Just click here.

Mark your calendars today for July 9–10 at the Elk River Inn and Restaurant in Slatyfork! WV Rivers will host a Birthplace of Rivers dinner at the inn Saturday night; on Sunday there will be guided trips into the monument, including hikes, bicycle rides led by Pocahontas Trails, and a fly-fishing outing.
