Explore Birthplace of Rivers: Red Spruce Knob Trail

Get your selfie on the highest point along the Scenic Highway—and barely break a sweat! From milepost 17.7, follow the Red Spruce Knob Trail on a 1.2-mile stroll as it climbs to 4,703 feet. A series of switchbacks makes for easy going to the knob topped by red spruce and cool rock formations. Check out the view of the Crooked Fork watershed.

Face of Birthplace of Rivers: Matt Kearns

After 9 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, Matt Kearns knew he wanted to come home the mountains. “The big draw for me is the Monongahela National Forest; it’s one of the places I love most in West Virginia.” Matt has been an awesome volunteer on Birthplace of Rivers; last spring he visited Senators Manchin and Capito in D.C., sharing a veteran’s perspective on the monument and the Antiquities Act. Now Matt is joining the monument campaign as West Virginia Rivers Coalition’s public lands specialist. Say Happy Veterans Day to
Matt.

Business for the Monument: Carroll Bassett and BMS

Carroll Bassett is a West Virginia technology inventor and entrepreneur. He is founder of
BMS Rescue, a manufacturer of technical rope rescue and recreational equipment and other ventures. He’s also president of the WV Cave Conservancy and on the board of the WV Association for Cave Studies. He gets jazzed about Birthplace of Rivers, he says, because preserving the best of West Virginia is good for all of West Virginia.

Birthplace of Rivers Postcards: You can help!

At last week’s WV Rivers rockin’ film fest in Morgantown, 105 people signed postcards asking Sen. Manchin to introduce monument legislation. Can you help get postcards signed? Contact Kathleen Tyner for information
