Legislative Update

West Virginia Legislature

The legislative session which ended in mid-March was a disappointment for those wanting stricter rules for drilling in the Marcellus Shale. The senate and the house were unable to compromise on a bill withing the regular session. Acting Governor Tomblin said he would not consider calling a special session to create a Marcellus bill.

We encourage our supporters to keep the Marcellus Shale debate going and talk to their legislators about this important issue.

FRAC Act

The FRAC Act or the "Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act" has been reintroduced to congress. Sen. Robert Casey (D-Pa) has introduced the bill into the Senate and Rep. Diana DeGette has introduced the legislation to the House. The FRAC Act, which failed to pass congress last year, would repeal the exemption of hydraulic fracturing regulation under the Safe Drinking Act. It would also require industry to reveal the contents of fracking fluid to the public, which up until now has been considered a trade secret.

To encourage your legislators to support hydraulic fracturing legislation please click here.
