Say NO to Didymo!

Didymo or "Rock Snot" is an invasive algae which has the feel of wet cotton effectively destroys habitat of native plants and wildlife by taking over stream beds. We've included a few tips on how to stop the spread of this nasty invasive.

When moving to a new watershed remember to Check Clean Dry

  • Always make sure gear is dry and disinfected when moving to a new watershed
  • Empty any water catches your boat may have before leaving the watershed
  • Leave gear to dry for at least 48 hours, felt bottomed waders will take longer to dry
  • Freezing gear overnight is an effective way to kill any remains of Didymo
  • Soak gear in hot water (140 degrees) for 40 minutes
  • Kayakers can clean gear on location by following the insturctions below:

Check - Look for clumps of algae on your gear, remove it and leave it far away from the water
Clean - Carry a portable cleaning kit.  Follow these steps to clean your boat and gear on the go…
· Put 2-5 gallons of water in container, try the one you carry wet gear in.  Add dishwashing detergent
·     -solution: add a little over 3/4 cup detergent to every gallon of water
· Drain boats and squeeze water out of wet gear
· Soak gear in the tub for at least 30 minutes, squeeze excess solution back into the tub
· Pour solution into kayak, slosh around to wet the inside.  Pour solution from kayak to kayak, repeat
· Sponge down the outside of kayaks and paddles with solution
· Dispose of any leftover solution in a container you carry with you, if you must dispose of the solution on location do it far away from the water
· Do not rinse gear off in the river, use tap water (you defeat the purpose of cleaning your gear if you do!)
Dry -If possible, leave your boat and gear to dry. If you can’t disinfect your gear let the gear dry for 48 hours before moving to a new watershed.
